All American Rejects
Tyson Ritter the frontman of All-American Rejects glares into the camera with his intense blue eyes, capped by thick brows and dark, indie-boy hair. He strains his vocals in at attempt to keep up with the blasting pop punk emanating from his band, falling in and out of week falsetto and looking suitably angry and soulful. He sounds fresh out of his Oklahoma garage, trying to keep on top of the pop hill wanting nothing more than to be a real boy with a real band. All-American Rejects released their self titled debut in 2003, and instantly gathered a not-quite-depressed-or-poetic-enough-to-be-emo teen fan base. The heartbreak album is full of Weezer inspired tracks with pleasing harmonies and generic guitar riffs. In 2005 they released Move Along, which included the hit single Dirty Little Secret. The video clip was inspired by the PostSecret Project - a web site which invites people to send in their deepest secrets on a postcard. The video clip has a range of masked people showing their own dirty little secrets to the camera. The album also includes Move Along, and It Ends Tonight in which All-American Rejects surprise their audience with a sentimental rock ballad. 2007 brought the band's third studio album When The World Comes Down. It's a fun, upbeat pack of rock anthems and the mid-tempo trendy 80s inspired tracks. While AAR have matured musically, it remains true to the band's early millennium garage pop sound. Topping the charts is the single Gives You Hell, a vindictive, toe-tapping shout out to an ex-girlfriend. It's a tradition in pop rock, the "oh, look, you dumped my ass years ago and now I'm rich and famous, bitch" song. Everybody does it, and vengeful songs of past heartbreaks never fail to please. Mona Lisa is an acoustic attempt at folk. Ritter's vocals clash with the style but props to AAR for experimenting with outside genres. They may be no more than ordinary and somewhat less than musically adequate, but they do what they do well. They fit into their niche like a glove common and unashamed. The angsty everyday, run of the mill bloke. The All-American Reject.
